The Missouri Senate passed Senate Bill 79 on Thursday, bringing Missouri Farm Bureau (MOFB) members one step closer to accessing affordable, effective and reliable health coverage. Many farmers, small business owners, and individuals not covered by group health insurance plans struggle to find affordable options on the marketplace. This crucial legislation will enable MOFB to offer health plans to its members that are projected to cost 30% less than comparable unsubsidized plans on the individual health insurance marketplace.

“Senate passage is a significant step forward in Missouri Farm Bureau’s mission to provide affordable health coverage options to our members,” said MOFB President Garrett Hawkins. “While there is still work to be done, we appreciate the bipartisan support shown by the Senate. We especially want to recognize the leadership of bill sponsor Senator Kurtis Gregory for his steadfast support and tireless work on this issue. We also want to thank Senate President Pro Tem Cindy O’Laughlin, Majority Leader Tony Luetkemeyer, and Senate Insurance and Banking Committee Chair Sandy Crawford for their leadership.

“For over 110 years, Missouri Farm Bureau’s mission has been to improve the quality of life for our members,” Hawkins continued. “Addressing the need for affordable health coverage options for hardworking farm families and entrepreneurs remains our top state legislative priority. Every day, we work to create opportunities that help our members improve farm profitability and provide for their families. Addressing the risk of inadequate health coverage not only benefits individuals and families but also supports our rural clinics and hospitals.”

These plans are designed to be affordable while also providing comprehensive coverage. Although this is a new concept in Missouri, these plans have a proven track record in 10 other states. For example, Tennessee Farm Bureau has been offering similar plans for 78 years and boasts a 98% retention rate.

Senate Bill 79 now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
