Good morning from the Lange Family! This is the view from our backyard. My husband Dylan and I help my family on their farm and have our own small cattle herd. Today, I plan to give you an insight into our family farm and our involvement in agriculture. Thanks @mofarmbreau for letting us take over Instagram for the day! ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. My parents have a feedlot at their house where steers are raised until 1200-1500 pounds before they’re sold. These cattle are fed homegrown silage. Silage is a feed made from the entire corn plant, stalk and all. This corn is usually harvested in late August. The silage is packed and allowed to ferment, making it a high quality food source for the cattle. In case you’re wondering why there is a huge mound of dirt in the feedlot, let me explain. That mound serves as a wind break for the cattle, and also as a dry place to lay when the feedlot gets muddy. Farmers care greatly about the livestock they raise and do what’s best for the animals. ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. We were fortunate to finish planting corn just in time for some much needed rain and wet ground means time to work cattle. These calves are a little over a year old. These calves will be replacement heifers for our herd next year. To keep the calves healthy, they are injected with a dewormer which also serves as a fly repellent. The calves also get immunized for pink eye, black leg, and other diseases. Pictured working the cattle are my brother Tyler and my dad Charlie. ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. It’s time to visit daddy at work! I am currently on maternity leave, so Collins and I like to bring Dylan lunch or an afternoon pick me up every once in a while. Dylan is the store manager at Sydenstrickers Implement in Chillicothe. This job allows Dylan to be very involved in our community and he really enjoys working with all of the people he meets. When Dylan gets off work at Sydenstrickers, he then often feeds cattle or works in the field. ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. As I said in an earlier post, we finished planting corn and received the glorious gift of rain we had all been praying for! 🙌🏼 As soon as the ground is dry enough, we will begin planting beans. We anticipate starting this in the next day or two. For this post, I’m using a couple of pictures from last week when we were planting corn. My family runs two 24 row, 20” planters for both corn and beans. Our ground is a mixture of conventional, minimum, and no till soil, depending on the year and the previous crop. ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. Philosophical post for the day. My many jobs on the farm include moving from one farm to another, running errands, and delivering food/drinks to the field. As a child, I helped my grandma and my mom do this job. When I turned 16, I got the weekend and summer shifts to myself. This picture is used to represent patience. As I wait to help my brother move equipment and see my baby sleeping in the back seat, I am reminded of the many times I’ve done this growing up. Farming requires a load of patience, whether it’s waiting for rain to come or waiting for rain to stop. When it comes to being the moving truck or delivery truck, waiting is often the name of the game. As a kid, I learned to use this time to take a nap, read a book, do homework, or get a sun tan. ☀️ I am so thankful our daughter Collins will have the opportunity to grow up on a farm and learn the many life lessons taught through agriculture. She will no doubt learn to be patient and occupy herself, take responsibility, care for animals, appreciate hard work, and most importantly have a strong faith in the Lord. ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. You’ve seen the men in the family, but it’s time to post about the woman who keeps this family and farm going. My mom, Sherry, is the master of all trades. She does the book work for the farm, keeps everyone fed (well-fed) and is an incredible agvocate. She serves as our county Farm Bureau president, and on other agricultural boards. Not to mention, she is an awesome Grammy! ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins. For my last post, I just want to say how excited I am to begin my job as the Northwest Regional Coordinator for Missouri Farm Bureau. I was raised in the Farm Bureau organization and have long considered working for them my dream job. Becoming a mom to this little cutie took the number one spot on my dream job list, but my position in Farm Bureau will no doubt rank as a close second! Thanks to @mofarmbureau for allowing me to take over Instagram today and thanks to everyone who followed along. For any young farmers around Livingston or Linn County, message me for details on our meeting tomorrow night. You can join a great group of young people and we promise you’ll have a good time! ___ Dylan and Meredith Lange live and work in Livingston County with their new baby girl, Collins.
