Good morning, and welcome to the 100th annual @americanfarmbureau Annual Convention. I’m Megan Allison (@mnallison17), and I’ll be your cruise director for the next few days. Hold on tight! Before we head over to today’s competitions, we have some very important business to attend to – breakfast! No trip to New Orleans is complete without a trip to @cafedumonde for some beignets (pronounced “ben-yays”), especially when you’re five months pregnant. 🤰These fluffy clouds of yumminess are like a funnel cake/doughnut/sopapilla completely drenched in powdered sugar. Mmmm… 😋 Pardon me while I go slip into a sugar coma. 😴 Oh wait, no time for sleep; we’ve got to get over to the Discussion Meet!! . . . First competition for the day. Dustin Stanton from Boone County is representing Missouri in the Young Farmers & Ranchers Discussion Meet. There are 36 people from states across the country ready to talk ag with one another. This is my first experience with a discussion meet, but what I’m gathering from the process is there are usually about four candidates in each room and they’re given a specific topic to discuss. Then it’s basically a debate/conversation, a “debatersation” if you will. This is Round 1; he’ll compete in Round 2 this afternoon. Cross your fingers that Dustin moves on to the Sweet 16 from these two rounds! Megan is an Air Force brat from Oklahoma turned small town farmer’s wife. The afternoon brings on the presentations from the YF&R Excellence in Agriculture state winners. Missouri is fortunate enough to have Julie Conover vying for the national honor against 29 other competitors. The Excellence in Ag Award is geared toward those who have the majority of their income generated from “off the farm.” Julie’s primary occupation is as the general manager for the Missouri Angus Association. In her quote/unquote spare time, she and her husband, Adam, also run Angus cattle and Berkshire and Yorkshire hogs. Megan is an Air Force brat from Oklahoma turned small town farmer’s wife. Day 2: Missouri Delegation breakfast. We had quite the turnout from the Show Me state – 75 strong! These are the people who have helped and guided this city girl since I first joined in on this crazy ag adventure two years ago. They’ve answered questions, put up with my lack of knowledge and shown me so much patience along the way. And man, have we had some fun!! . . The @americanfarmbureau 100th Annual Convention has officially kicked off! During the opening ceremony we got to hear a little from the @lafarmbureau president, Louisana’s governor and, of course, @zippyduvall represented AFBF. But we’re definitely most proud of our own @mofarmbureau President Blake Hurst, who waved our flag high and proud during the parade of state flags. And I learned something fun during the centennial history review from Zippy: Missouri had the first State Farm Bureau. Now that’s something to brag about. We’ve been around from the get-go, and we’ve been agvocating ever since! Megan is an Air Force brat from Oklahoma turned small town farmer’s wife. We’ve been a bit more low-key today. We watched a friend from Kansas compete in the Sweet 16 of the Discussion Meet and then did a little walking around the French Quarter. (And we may or may not have had some more beignets. Guilty. 🤷🏼‍♀️) . . Since we’ve been more lax this afternoon, I thought I’d introduce you to our farm. My husband is the 6th generation at Allison Farms in South Greenfield (Dade County). He farms with his grandpa, dad and brother, where they row crop corn, wheat and soybeans, and run a commercial cow/calf operation using all registered Angus bulls. My role on the farm doesn’t involve much at the moment; mostly just providing company and entertainment in the grain cart during harvest and while checking cows. . . For the second year in a row, President Trump addressed the attendees at the @americanfarmbureau annual convention. Today he helped us celebrate our centennial and commended the farmers and ranchers who have worked and continue to work so hard to provide for our great country. He also gave a shoutout to Stockton-native Kalena Bruce (past @afbfyfr chair) for what she’s done for rural Missouri and the work she’s put into tax reform. Marc and I head back this evening. I’ve gotta get back to my students and the cows are calling for my husband. Thanks so much for following along as I journeyed through my first AFBF conference and experienced all it had to offer. And thank you @mofarmbureau for providing us this amazing opportunity. We had an absolute blast! Megan is an Air Force brat from Oklahoma turned small town farmer’s wife.
