Advocating for farmers, the rural way of life, and all Missourians.

The First State Farm Bureau

In 1915, Missouri made history by becoming home to the first state Farm Bureau in the United States. More than 300 farmers gathered for the inaugural meeting of the Missouri Association of Farm Bureau Counties in Slater, Missouri, on March 24–25, 1915.

By that time, 13 county Farm Bureaus had already formed across the state. Pettis County Farm Bureau—the first, established in 1912—sent 34 delegates to that historic convention. From the beginning, Missouri farmers recognized the power of uniting at the county and state levels to strengthen agriculture.

Growing Roots in Missouri Agriculture

In its early years, Farm Bureau advisors hired by county organizations served as the forerunners to today’s Agricultural Extension agents, helping farmers improve production and management practices.

Though formal financial ties with Extension ended long ago, Farm Bureau members remain deeply involved in Extension programs and 4-H youth councils, continuing a century-long tradition of supporting agricultural education and leadership.

A Grassroots Network

Today, Missouri Farm Bureau represents more than 157,000 member families across all 114 counties. Every county has its own local Farm Bureau organization and at least one local office, creating a powerful grassroots network that amplifies the voices of Missouri’s farmers and ranchers.

Our volunteer leaders work tirelessly to represent members in Jefferson City, Washington, D.C. and beyond, with the goal of advocating for sound agricultural policy and a stronger future for Missouri’s #1 industry.

Member-Driven Policy

All Missouri Farm Bureau policies are written and voted upon by grassroots volunteer members, not paid staff. Our legislative team then works year-round to implement those member-driven priorities through advocacy with lawmakers and regulatory agencies.

Each year, more than 1,000 members attend our annual meeting at the Lake of the Ozarks, where they debate and adopt policy, hear from national experts and enjoy fellowship with friends from across the state.

More Than a Century of Service

Beyond advocacy, Missouri Farm Bureau offers members valuable benefits—including insurance coverage through the state’s largest insurer for farmers and ranchers, along with discounts on vehicles, travel, lodging, and more.

After more than 100 years, Missouri Farm Bureau continues to be the voice of agriculture.
