Every morning before school the kids head to the barn to check on and care for their show pigs. This year the have three crossbreeds, a gilt Lilly and two barrows Billy and Butch. This barn was once an old garage that we moved from another farm here to our home place. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! As farmers one thing that we are always doing is checking on how things are growing. Seth and I stopped at the first field we planted a week ago to see how the seed corn was doing. It was just beginning to sprout and with warm temperatures and a little moisture it will soon emerge. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! Two years ago we decided to start our own seed company. This gives us additional income and allows Seth to be home more then when he worked as a Regional Sales Manger for a regional seed company. Even though we are planting ourselves, we also have to receive, deliver and treat seed for other farmers. Seed comes to us treated or untreated in bags or boxes. There are 40 units of bags in a one unit box. After receiving the seed we work with the farmer to determine what type of treatment they want on their seed. Some may choose no treatment and others may want a full workup. That is the great thing about farming. Each operation is unique and different and what works for one, may not work for another. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! My role on the farm varies from day to day, but every day I am here working beside my husband and my father. This time of year I run seed to the field, help fill the planter, run the harrow, help move equipment to fields and bring lunch. I leave the planting to the guys….that way I can’t get blamed if something goes wrong. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! We have been having a bit of trouble with the GPS in the tractor. The John Deere Service Tech came out to ride along yesterday to see what might need to be adjusted. We rely on all kinds of experts to help make things run as smoothly as possible. Seth and I farm our own acres, cash rent and share crop with a landlord. My dad, who has been farming since he returned from serving in the army at Vietnam, also farms his own ground and share crops. We may have our own pieces of land, but we help each other out with everything and share equipment. That is very important for a young farming family like ours. It helps to keep our overhead lower and in return for use of equipment we service, maintain and make needed repairs. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! After the Kids get home from school we usually head out to take who ever is planting a drink and a snack. This afternoon it was their grandpa in the tractor. He taught them all at an early age how to dig for seed to check the depth. It’s now the first thing they do when getting to the field. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday! Kendall jumped at the chance to ride with her dad while he took over planting. It is great quality time for the two of them. The kids do know that working long hours and sometimes late into the night is just part of being farmers. That is why it is so important that they see the hard work that we do and how we are tending to and caring for the land and or livestock. Their first hand experiences will allow them to someday tell their own story. ___ The Link family is taking over our Instagram account for #TakeoverTuesday!
